about

"The concept of 'Replicant' is transformation. Initially, the piece was a stand-alone prepared piano piece, with bolts woven into the strings of the piano. As I develop the piece with my producer William Brittelle, and with contributions from guest artists Andy Akiho (steel-pan), Emily Wells (vocal), and Immanuel Wilkins (alto sax), Replicant became a delicate morphing of a 25-year-cycle. 1945- the year the atomic bomb dropped, 1970-the year of Expo '70 in Osaka where I grew up, 1995- the year I experienced the Kobe earthquake, and 2020- when Covid turned the world upside down. The piece is a time traveler, but at the same time, it is stuck in a place where time doesn't exist.” - Erika Dohi
